Wes Self, an 8th grade math teacher, was named Heartland’s first teacher of the year on Monday. Self’s involvement with Edmond’s newest school began three years ago during its design phase as he served on a committee of educators working in consultation with Heartland’s architects.
Self is from Wewoka, Oklahoma and attended the University of Oklahoma and the University of Central Oklahoma. He is in his 18th year of teaching in Edmond Public Schools, and spent the previous 17 years at Summit Middle School. Prior to retiring from coaching three years ago, Self also coached football for 19 years.
Self strives to have students laugh and enjoy his class since he has learned that when students look forward to class they are eager to learn. Self is well-known for his celebration of Pi Day through cross-curricular activities in a variety of subjects and his promotion of math frenzy throughout the district.
Outside of the classroom, Self enjoys golfing, OU sports, barbeque smoking, and spending time with his family. He is married to Dr. Kristi Self and has two daughters: Dr. Kayle Sneed and Logan Parsons.
